Today is partly sunny, humid, and hot.  It drizzled yesterday evening.

I haven't fed the birds yet, but I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches.  They've put a good dent in the thistle seed again.

New Year's Resolutions Check In

We made it to the end of June! \o/ If you have completed some of your medium-term goals or subgoals, and/or you're still chugging away at your ongoing goals, then pat yourself on the back. You worked hard for that. We've also entered summer. If you're doing seasonal goals, hopefully you have finished the spring one(s), and started on the summer batch.

This year I'm trying something new, continuing to track goals at the end of each month. So far it seems to be helping, so that's encouraging. I'm looking at my goal list more often and trying to keep ticking off more of them. The main drawback is that this update becomes more of a chore each month.

These are the previous check in posts:

Sex swap in seconds: The fish that takes charge and changes gender

Remove the top male spotty fish and, within minutes, the next-in-line female morphs into the tank s new tyrant charging and nipping rivals while her body quietly begins a weeks-long transition to male.

Sex and gender are more fluid than most humans realize. Transition is a natural and normal process.

Buried for 23,000 years: These footprints are rewriting American history

Footprints found in the ancient lakebeds of White Sands may prove that humans lived in North America 23,000 years ago — much earlier than previously believed. A new study using radiocarbon-dated mud bolsters earlier findings, making it the third line of evidence pointing to this revised timeline.

I've been to White Sands. Interesting place, but bizarre. The air is blistering hot, but sand stays cool. Its albedo is too high to absorb much heat.

After staying up very late watching our new binge, The Lincoln Lawyer, [personal profile] mashfanficchick and I got up late this morning. Stuff was going on by email and text about the cottage rental, too. I showered and dressed, and we went to Starbucks for coffee, and some egg bites.

Then we headed in to Pridefest. It was hot but not too bad, and one of the stalls was giving out free sunblock. We walked all through the fest, I only bought some lemonade and something Korean to eat, but there was a lot of free stuff.

The Kid called me about the cottage right when I was getting off the subway there, so we talked that through and decisions were made.

Nice thing, I was wearing my Bard Alumni baseball cap, and a girl caught up to me, and it turned out she was an incoming Freshman, and wanted to know what it was like. So I gave her a glowing report, and she was happy, so that made me feel good.

Eventually we finished everything, and we took the subway back, though [personal profile] mashfanficchick didn't go home, ze went to zer father's cause it's his birthday. I went back to zer apartment to pick up my overnight stuff, and kill time til the Uber home would be cheaper at night.

I got back successfully, and packed my stuff, and I ordered my tickets for my trip to the cottage, I am going on a Thursday because I thought that would be cheaper ticketing than Saturday. It wasn't but it's two extra day so OK.

Then I Teamed the FWiB. We were on for about an hour and a half when his brother called and he had to get off. Which was OK because it was time for me to call Middle Brother. Who is doing fine.

Then I packed up the computer, and went to Uber home. That was weird. I put in the request, and was told there was someone 4 minutes away. But he kept getting further away rather than closer! And just when I was about to cancel the ride and request another, the app reset, and I got another driver, also about 4 minutes away. Good, I thought. But almost immediately the app rest again, and I got a third driver, who did in fact show up and take me home. Weird!

I got home, and all was well. I unpacked a bit, fed the pets, and started here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. The cottage rental situation is settled.

3. Got my tickets.

4. Pridefest!

5. Was able to reassure that girl.

6. Got home eventually.

Today is cloudy, muggy, and hot -- but considerably less hot than the past week. Today it's 81°F which is hot but "be careful not to overdo yardening" not "stay indoors until it cools off" hot.

I fed the birds. I refilled the thistle feeder. I've seen a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches plus a pair of mourning doves.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/29/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/29/25 -- I walked around the yard. I picked a few mulberries but there aren't a lot left. I picked a few black raspberries. That season is almost over too. :( The blackberries are starting to ripen, though, so I can start on those.

Wild bergamot, black-eyed Susans, narrow-leaf mountain mint, and purple echinacea are blooming. Yellow coneflower and cup plants have flower buds. Most of the Asiatic lilies have already bloomed, but some are still going -- I have several varieties.

EDIT 6/29/25 -- I was going to pick blackberries, but it started raining. :/

So I was keeping an eye on the new super-mouse for when it would be in stock. It was estimated to be in stock by the 30th, but that date has been moving around quite a bit, so I was checking it daily.

Two days ago, it was in stock. They had 25 of them. I ordered one immediately. (Parcel tracking info says I can expect it tomorrow.)

Because I was curious, I checked it again today. All gone. Not just 'out of stock, expecting more at this date' gone. It's gone!

Good thing I jumped on it as soon as I had the opportunity, because clearly it wasn't just me.

In other quite closely related news, the new computer is ready for me to move into, except for the tiny detail of my monitor being old and it turned out that an adapter was necessary because the cables are obsolete. Luckily Husband was able to source one as click and collect which he has just gone to pick up, and it's a very cheap item as well. Delayed the process by a few hours, though.

I do have plans to upgrade the monitor as well, but I don't want to do so yet. Come winter when we will likely begin the process of redecorating my room, there is also going to be some changes to the furniture, which means I might have room for a 2 monitor situation. I see little need to start replacing it until we know whether this is in fact the case, because the only thing wrong with the current one is a tendency to sometimes turn itself off completely instead of remaining on standby. This is mysterious and slightly inconvenient, but hardly a huge problem. Especially considering it's been in daily use for 15 years.

Got up later than I should have, had breakfast and coffee, showered and dressed, and still managed to make it to my Al-anon meeting on time.

The meeting was very good, I went to the diner afterward. Then took the bus home.

I packed clothing and my laptop, and came over to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's. We had dinner and I Teamed the FWiB. And we have discovered a new series to watch, The Lincoln Lawyer. Watched a bunch of episodes and now going to bed.

Laurie texted me a lot today, and the Kid called me, about the cottage stuff.

That's about all. Very late, need to get to bed.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. New series to watch.

3. My meetings and the people at them.

4. The weather was not too hot today.

5. Air conditioning.

Researchers at Virginia Tech have developed a 3D-printed evaporative cooling system made of hollow clay columns that can cool the surrounding air by up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit.

The columns are filled with water and sand, and when warm air passes through the porous clay exterior, water stored in the sand columns evaporates, which in turn, cools the air that passes through

Philosophical Questions: Morals

ysabetwordsmith: Cartoon of me in Wordsmith persona (Default)
[personal profile] ysabetwordsmith
People have expressed interest in deep topics, so this list focuses on philosophical questions.

Do people in wealthier countries have a moral obligation to help those in poorer countries?

If you want to hold all the money, you have to pay all the bills. If you don't want to pay all the bills, make sure other folks have enough money to pay their own.

Also, there is no Planet B.  Climate change affects everyone -- but the people in wealthy countries who are causing it have thus far suffered less than people in poor countries who haven't caused it.  If you don't make it feasible for them to stay in their own countries, they will leave so they don't die, and wash up in wealthy countries.  This is already happening some, but you have seen nothing yet.  It will be like the waves of the sea beating the shore, over and over again, until people think they would give anything to make it stop.  And then it will stop.  And then people will wish, just as desperately, to have that many people ever again as the losses pile up and there aren't enough hands  left to hold up civilization.

Family stuff and Al-anon

Had the alarm set for 10:00 but hit the snooze button til almost 11:00. Then got up and had breakfast.

Had therapy which was good. Then had coffee, showered and dressed.

Did a little cleaning, as I'm trying to get back to my resolution to do a little bit every day. I emptied the overflowing trash can of junk mail and took it out

I heard back from both John and Laure about the cottage deed and I now have the paperwork. Laure Facebook messaged me about the cottage insurance, and renting the cottage to Ricky. I have to call the Kid to discuss.

I spoke to Jen, [personal profile] mashfanficchick's lawyer, about the cottage deed and she gave me some helpful advice.

Finally at 5:15 I left for my Al-anon meeting in the Bronx. Had pizza for dinner first. The meeting was small but good. M gave me a ride to the bus stop afterward.

Got home and Teamed the FWiB. Then fed the pets and started here. Got the entry almost all finished when I did something and most of it disappeared and I had to start over. *grumble*

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. My meetings and the people there.

3. The living room looks better.

Folks have mentioned an interest in questions and conversations that make them think. So I've decided to offer more of those. This batch features hobbies.

Stage magic is a hobby of illusion. There are many styles, from closeup to grand stage effects. Some can be done with very affordable props. Much is now available online for free. If you have any interest in card magic, start with The Royal Road to Card Magic and an ordinary deck of playing cards. Pay attention to skill trees, that is, which techniques will enable you to learn more techniques based on them. Note that this hobby is fun and easy to start, but getting good at it will require a lot of practice.

On Dreamwidth, consider creative communities like [community profile] justcreate.

Eye surgeon

I got up at 10:00 and had breakfast and coffee, then showered and dressed. I got a call from the movers that have oldest Brother's stuff in storage, and had to straighten out some issues.

I also called the Niagara County clerks office, didn't speak to anyone but learned that to get a copy of the deed I'll have to write.

I read for an hour, finishing off the Agatha Christie I was working on (Easy to Kill), then at 1:00 I started getting ready to go to my eye surgeon appointment.

I took the 13 bus, and got there right on time, though I was expecting to be early. The Kid called me while I was on the bus, she called the cottage insurance company herself and found out that, just as I was told, everything is all right to rent to Ricky.

After waiting for awhile at the surgeon's, and having my eye examined again, I finally got to make the appointment for the surgery, which is July 11th. My insurance will cover most of it, but it's going to be $500 out of pocket. Which will hurt, especially this month. But I have to do it, my left eye is really bad now.

I texted the Kid to ask if she could be my escort for the surgery, but she has a doctor's appointment of her own that day. So when I got home, I made lunch and then called [personal profile] mashfanficchick and ze will.

After that I ended up sort of napping and dozing until a little after 6:00, when I got on the computer.

I Facebook messaged Herschel because it's his birthday, he replied he was out but would message me when he got home.

At a bit before 7:00 I Teamed the FWiB, and we had a nice time, for over an hour and a half, getting off just in time for me to call Middle Brother.

Then Herschel did message back so we had a bit of a conversation. which was very nice.

Then I had dinner, and went to the bedroom and played solitaire til pet feeding time.

Now I'm charging my fitbit while I write here.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Herschel.

3. The Kid.

4. My insurance.

5. [personal profile] mashfanficchick

6. Air conditioning.

Goblincore is an aesthetic based on the darker side of faery and the appreciation of imperfect things that other people often consider ugly or otherwise undesirable. Many of the reference pages are less than flattering, but the entries on Wikipedia and Aesthetics Wiki offer a starting point. It is laughably dated to the 2020s. I'm guessing whoever wrote that missed the entire history of fairytales, curiosity cabinets, and the rest of its very long history.

I slept late, and got up and had breakfast and coffee. I unpacked my duffle bag from my trip, dressed, and took out the garbage.

I made a phone call to the cottage insurance company since they didn't call me back Monday. I made a call to the company that's storing Oldest Brother's belongings. I rented a storage until where [personal profile] mashfanficchick has zer unit, to move Oldest Brother's things into.

I Teamed the FWiB. I didn't have D&D tonight, it was canceled.

Just had a long conversation with the Kid about the plan to rent the cottage. She's bogged down on insurance details, and stuff about the deed problems.

Fed the pets, now it's time for bed.

Tomorrow I have an appointment with the eye surgeon.

Gratitude List:

I spotted this video about harvesting, shaping, and firing wild clay. I did that back in high school at Ancient Lifeways Camp. It was a lot of fun to dig and clean the clay, then make things. Our theme was Sumeria, so we made oil lamps (harder than you'd think) and cuneiform quotes. I also made a ceramic goddess figurine. We used a pit fire, which helps keep the temperature more stable. If you have a source of natural clay, this kind of project is well worth trying.

A Rainbow of Queer Books for Pride 2025: Indigo

HAPPY PRIDE 2025! For Pride this year, we’re changing up our usual rec lists. Instead of doing books with specific identities or themes, we’re focused this time on cover color! Throughout the month of June, we’ll be doing 8 rec lists, each with covers inspired by one of the colors of the original Gilbert Baker Pride Flag. We drew a little additional inspiration from the meaning behind the color and why it was included in the original LGBTQIA+ flag (in this case, indigo = serenity), but we prioritized color over meaning. The contributors to this list are: Shadaras, polls, Shannon, Linnea Peterson, Nina Waters, and Tris Lawrence.

Good news includes all the things which make us happy or otherwise feel good. It can be personal or public. We never know when something wonderful will happen, and when it does, most people want to share it with someone. It's disappointing when nobody is there to appreciate it. Happily, blogging allows us to share our joys and pat each other on the back.

What good news have you had recently? Are you anticipating any more? Have you found a cute picture or a video that makes you smile? Is there anything your online friends could do to make your life a little happier?

Voting and doctor

Got up this morning at 10 and had breakfast and coffee, then showered and dressed. Then I walked down to my polling place and voted in the NYC Democratic primary, the main race being for the nomination for mayoral candidate.

That took very little time, even in the extreme heat, and I came back and waited for RK to pick me up which he did at about 12:30. Then we picked up [personal profile] mashfanficchick and took zer to vote.

Then they took me too the surgeon for my six months check up. She said I was fine, could put something for the scar on it. And to come back in six months. I was very early but they they took me early so I was actually out in a reasonable time.

So then we went to get lunch. We got Thai, and went to RK's place to eat. Rene was there so she joined us after we ate and played games. We played one round to Cards Against Humanity and a game of What the Dub. Then it was getting late so he took me and [personal profile] mashfanficchick and we started for home.

But first we went to BJ's for some quick shopping, and then we went to Starbucks for hydration. Then they brought me home and I did my Al-anon meeting.

M was the only one there so we ended a bit early, and then I Teamed the FWiB. We talked for almost an hour and a half, which was nice.

The Kid texted me, she is at a Mamdani watch party, watching the promary returns, and it loks as though Mamdani is the winner.

[personal profile] mashfanficchick just called me and we talked a bit.

I will be going to bed to read shortly. I finished Faithbreaker last niight so I need to find something else to read.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Mamdani win over Cuomo.

3. My surgeon says I'm good.

4. RK.

5. Good lunch.

6. Air conditioning.

Poetry Fishbowl on Tuesday, July 1

This is an advance announcement for the Tuesday, July 1, 2025 Poetry Fishbowl. This time the theme will be "Weaponized Incompetence and Malicious Compliance." I'll be soliciting ideas for activists, rebels, traitors, exes, abuse survivors, refugees, runaway youth, slaves or other captives, slavers, housemates, siblings, parents, teachers, clergy, leaders, bosses, employees, superheroes, supervillains, teammates, alien or fantasy species, failure analysts, ethicists, other people who get into untenable situations, protesting, dragging your feet, breaking things, causing problems because you were told to, planning, throwing in the towel, escaping, running like someone left the gate open, adventuring, hitchhiking, quitting school, divorcing, disowning, betraying, teaching, leaving your comfort zone, discovering things, conducting experiments, observation changing experiments, troubleshooting, improvising, adapting, cleaning up messes, cooperating, bartering, taking over in an emergency, saving the day, discovering yourself, studying others, testing boundaries, coming of age, learning what you can (and can't) do, sharing, preparing for the worst, expecting the unexpected, fixing what's broke, upsetting the status quo, changing the world, accomplishing the impossible, recovering from setbacks, returning home, slave ships, slave quarters, abusive homes, trails, sailing ships, campervans or RVs, distant lands, the forest primeval, prehistory, liminal zones, schools, residential school-concentration camps, homeless shelters, hotels, churches, sharehouses, campfires, laboratories, supervillain lairs, nonhuman accommodations and adaptations, stores, starships, alien planets, magical lands, foreign dimensions, other places where the intolerable happens, unhappy relationships, crappy jobs, educational abuse, responsibility without authority is abuse, protest rallies, slavery or captivity, locks or chains, travel mishaps, sudden surprises, the buck stops here, trial and error, intercultural entanglements, asking for help and getting it, enemies to friends/lovers, interdimensional travel, lab conditions are not field conditions, superpower manifestation, the end of where your framework actually applies, ethics, innovation, problems that can't be solved by hitting, teamwork, found family, complementary strengths and weaknesses, personal growth, and poetic forms in particular.

Weaponized incompetence has two modes:
* One is shirking a fair share of work by pretending to be bad at it: for instance, copper-digging men who try to con women into doing all the emotional labor. (Take care to distinguish this from people who don't know how to do things because they were never taught, or people who are genuinely bad at a category of thing.)
* The other is a form of activism, and indeed, one of the leading forms of resistance in slavery: doing work slowly, sloppily, breaking tools, playing dumb, etc. It's exactly how black people got a reputation for being stupid and lazy, because their ancestors were unwilling to be exploited and fought back in subtle ways.

Malicious compliance is following an order to the letter, expecting that to cause problems. It is a form of protest most often used when pointing out a flaw or proposing a better solution would be ignored or even punished.

Among my more relevant series for the main theme:

An Army of One is developing its own neurovariant culture after rebelling against the Galactic Arms.

The Bear Tunnels introduces modern principles to people in the past, touching on slavery and rebellion.

Not Quite Kansas includes demons, who are masters of malicious compliance.

The Ocracies has a wide variety of countries crammed together, each with a totally different government. Sometimes people leave their homeland to find something they like better.

One God's Story of Mid-Life Crisis follows Shaeth as he works on becoming the God of Drunks after quitting as the God of Evili.

Peculiar Obligations mixes Quakers and pirates, among other things. It's another setting where people strive against slavery.

Polychrome Heroics has ordinary humans, supernaries, blue-plate specials, superheroes, supervillains, primal and animal soups all trying to get along and figure out how to make a functional society. The supervillains are the most likely to practice weaponized incompetence and malicious compliance.

Or you can ask for something new.

Linkbacks reveal a verse of any open linkback poem.

If you're interested, mark the date on your calendar, and please hold actual prompts until the "Poetry Fishbowl Open" post next week. (If you're not available that day, or you live in a time zone that makes it hard to reach me, you can leave advance prompts. I am now.) Meanwhile, if you want to help with promotion, please feel free to link back here or repost this on your blog.

You Might Not Recover from Burnout. Ever.

Hea has been unemployed for a little over two years, and she can’t see that ending anytime soon. Her burnout has been catastrophic — and so far, bottomless.

“I went on short-term disability at first, for my mental health, but after that ran out I used up all of my sick days. Then I applied for a longer medical leave, which shockingly, I got for a little while,” she explains. “I was luckier than most people, who don’t get any paid time off. But then they mysteriously eliminated my position. I’ve been floundering ever since.”

Today is partly sunny and sweltering.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows and house finches.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 6/24/25 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

EDIT 6/24/25 -- I watered the seedlings in the savanna and the telephone pole garden.

The honeybees have their air conditioning on, roaring away as they flap their wings to cool the hive.  The first fireflies are coming out.

EDIT 6/24/25 -- I watered the new picnic table plants, the septic garden, and the old picnic table plants.

There are sooo many fireflies out tonight.  The grass is sparkling.  :D  Cicadas are singing.

As it is getting dark, I am done for the night.

Heat wave day

Got up at a bit after 10:00 and str and had coffee. Then showered and washed my hair. I put in the curl stuff that Dani recommended, and I think it looks pretty good.

I called the insurance company about the cottage insurance. She said she would have to call the underwriters and ask, and would call me back. No one has called.

I went to [personal profile] mashfanficchick's place, and we waited for Dani and John. The trip there was OK, the walking bits were very hot, but the bus and subways were nicely air conditioned.

Dani and John hit a lot of bad traffic and it was quite late when they got there. We went to the storage unit and put some of the stuff for them and stuff for [personal profile] mashfanficchick's father in the car, then drove to Great Neck. We couldn't get everything because it was too hot to be moving all the stuff around.

We dropped zer father's stuff off and then ate dinner at a pizza place. Then we headed home. We made a stop at J Mart for some stuff too.

They took me home and helped me in with all my stuff that had been in the car, the duffle bag, my pillow, my jacket, and a bag of stuff, plus my two 12 packs of sugar free Vernors.

Then I got on the computer and Teamed the FWiB.

Tomorrow RK is taking me to my doctor's appointment, Then I'm taking him out to eat. [personal profile] mashfanficchick is coming too.

Gratitude List:

1. The FWiB.

2. Air conditioning.

3. Clean hair nicely curled.

4. Friends.

5. The Kid texted.

6. Bed soon.

Americans share their hopes for the country on 'wish walls' nationwide. The responses are surprisingly unifying

On July 4, 2026, the United States of America will celebrate its 250th birthday. To prepare for the big celebration, museums across the country are inviting the public to answer the question: “What’s your wish for America’s future?”

In a project designed by 26-year-old artist Katie Costa and developed by Made By Us, a nonprofit that promotes civic engagement among Gen-Z, thousands are responding

New cheese packaging decomposes in 300 days, not 1,000 years: 'The solution was in the cheese itself'

As an alternative to single-use plastic wrapping, Ogilvy Colombia and Nestlé Central America have created “Self-Packing Cheese.”

The new biodegradable film is designed to decompose within 300 days of disposal — in stark contrast to the estimated 1,000 years it takes for standard plastic to break down.

And it’s entirely made from cheese waste and whey
.

Now that's brilliant!  Admittedly, we tend to buy block cheese or shredded cheese rather than slices, but lots of people prefer slices.

"In the Heart of the Hidden Garden" belongs to the Antimatter and Stalwart Stan thread of the Polychrome Heroics series. It needs $66 to be fully funded. Lawrence shows Stan the Iron Courtyard garden.

The weather has been sweltering here and is predicted to remain so for the rest of the week. The weekend currently predicts rain, though. Seen at the birdfeeders this week: a mixed flock of sparrows and house finches, several mourning doves, a male cardinal, a catbird, a skunk, a fox squirrel, and at least 1 probably 2 bats. Zucchini has flower buds. Currently blooming: dandelions, pansies, violas, marigolds, petunias, red salvia, wild strawberries, verbena, lantana, sweet alyssum, zinnias, snapdragons, blue lobelia, perennial pinks, impatiens, oxalis, moss rose, yarrow, red coreopsis, anise hyssop, firecracker plant, tomatoes, tomatillos, Asiatic lilies, cucumber, astilbe, daylilies, snowball bush, yellow squash, zucchini, morning glory. The first 'Chocolate Sprinkles' tomato ripened. Blackberries and tomatoes have fruit showing color. Wild strawberries, mulberries, and black raspberries are ripe.

I. Yesterday was eventful! Husband started working on putting my new computer together. He ran some tests and then we might sit down and migrate me on Sunday, because I'll need a little help with that. Sick Gamer Rig is coming!

II. Also yesterday, we went and fetched a hedgehog. I have mentioned before that Husband volunteers with this hedgehog organisation, where he is occasionally called upon to drive a hedgehog to a wildlife carer. Well, yesterday it was the other way around! The carer had one that was ready to be released but they had been having trouble finding a suitable place. They like to release them as close as possible to where they were found, so it ideally had to be in the town where we live, but for various reasons the actual finding spot was not suitable. So they asked him if we had an appropriate garden for it, and we do! Mrs. Tiggywinkle was released yesterday afternoon, in so far as we put the box down and opened it and she chose not to come out, so no pictures. They are nocturnal animals, so that was expected. I did see a hedgehog on the wildlife camera quite close by last night, though, which is almost certainly this one. We are to support feed it for about a week.

It was powerful cute and I wanted very much to pet it, but managed somehow to control myself.

III. On Saturday we went and spent the evening with friends which was lovely. We live a little ways apart and we're not good at arranging something very often, so to our surprise, it was determined that it was two years since we saw them last. Maybe we should try to aim for at least once a year in future.

IV. In other news, SIL's adoption process has come to an officially successful end a few weeks ago! I am now for ACTUAL REAL someone's aunt. First reaction to this news was to consider how old he will have to be to get something out of Legoland. The conclusion was at least 2-3 more years.

V. It appears I never actually mentioned it here, but my plan to sew a skirt out of some never used duvet covers? Success! (Picture over at Pillowfort) Has it been suitable weather that I actually wanted to wear it yet? Well... we live in hope. If it's suitable weather on a work day, I'll be cycling and so not wearing a skirt, so I'm a little limited.

VI. I thought I had more news... Oh well. 23 work days left before summer holiday.

Audience Becomes Choir

This performance from AGT snagged my attention, in which the contestant turns the audience into a choir.

1) Some people with Bardic gift can share theirs with other people; it's rare but I've known people who could do it.  That's likely part of this.

2) Some people have a gift for conveying abstract ideas visually, which is rare enough, but doing it intuitively like that is really rare and impressive.  Musical scores are precise but take a lot of training to read, especially sight-read without practice.  Creating a visual representation of a song in three voices (high, middle, low) with indications of pitch and duration -- which works well as demonstrated -- is epic.

Business world: "Dammit, I wish we had someone that good with visuals to do whiteboard notes for our meetings."

Music world: "We saw her first."
